Today is a special day. A day when individuals and organisations join hands in the fight against cancer. The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Dispeling the myths and misconceptions about cancer’.
The truth of the matter is that cancer is REAL. Cancer can lead to death but can only be prevented if necessary precautions are taken to detect it on time through screening, early detection and prompt treatment.
It mind-blowing to know that a lot of Nigerians do care about their health as people, especially the women, came out en-masse to have routine checks on their breasts, cervical cancer screening and prostate cancer screening for the men. Or could it be because the screening was free?!
Whatever the case may be, today was a success not only for ASTRAH but for a lot of individuals who went home knowing that they were in good health and others who discovered lumps early enough.
Finally, it is noteworthy to inform Nigerians to increase ownership of their health by:
1. Exercising regularly
2. Eating better nourished and adequate diet
3. Losing weight if obese.
4. Stop smoking cigarettes or tobacco
5. Reduction of alcohol intake
6. Regular health checks.
Hopefully, there will be a decrease in the incidence of cancer.
