It is essential that we acknowledge and value the strength of the woman to empower her within our society. The woman is the centre of the family in Sri Lanka. She is a daughter, mother, wife, friend who deserves to have full human rights.

In the past, I collaborated with the National YWCA to raise awareness on HIV/AID and other human rights topics in the rural areas of Sri Lanka. We educated the young girls and mothers about a wide range of topics including; family planning, domestic abuse, sexual abuse and resources available to them in case of an emergency. Most of the young girls that we spoke to during our secession were very shy because they did not want to speak in front of their mothers. But, after their mothers left the room, the young girls spoke out about their experiences and asked a lot of questions.
